BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP
PETERSEN DEFEATS GAINS.
TOWEL AFTER THIRTEENTH ROUND.
By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. London, Sept. 10.
In a 15-round bout for the Empire heavyweight championship at White City, Jack Petersen, the holder, defeated Larry Gains (South Africa), who retired in the thirteenth round. There was a record attendance of 64,000.
Petersen forced the pace, although Gains was cleverer in ringcraft, enabling him to avoid much of the heavy punishment. Petersen landed terrific blows in the thirteenth round and Gains reeled at the gong. He staggered to his corner and the towel was thrown in.
