SEASON’S FIRST CLASSIC

WANGANUI GUINEAS RACE

10 HORSES PAID OP FOR CONTEST.

CANDIDATES' FORM DISCUSSED. (By “Hurry On.”) For many years the Wanganui Guineas has provided the first of the season s three-year-old classics and big interest always centres, round this event. Though the field for Saturday's race does not look as strong as many of those of the past, there is plenty of material for a really .good contest. Several of the runners showed really good form last season and their showings will be watched with interest. As the winner of the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes and equal first in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, Burnish will naturally claim a great deal of attention. She did little early racing, but jumped into prominence with two wips at the Ellerslie summer gathering* She is a massive filly whose recent track work has been impressive. x After carrying off the Welcome and the Foal Stakes at Ellerslie, Mother Superior was hailed as the best of her age but her form during the autumn was disappointing. Being trained privately at Fordell little has been heard of her this season and her showing in the Seafield Handicap to-morrow will be closely watched.

Though he carried off the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton in November Pin Money was a little below first class as a two-year-old. He showed plenty of pace in his outing at Marton and should be all the better for the race. Without ever being regarded as a champion Namakia was distinctly useful last autumn. She was usually finishing on at the end. of her races, and generally gave the impression that she would prove a useful three-year-old. Superior had two runs at New Plymouth, where her showings were far from impressive. She will need to run a great race in the Flying Handicap tomorrow to command a following on Saturday. Hunting Queen ran a fair race ir the Maiden at Marton, but it was not a Guineas trial. Inveresk was a runner in the same event but was never a possibility. The southerner, Synagogue, was a good sort of a two-year-old, winning races at Trentham. He was raced at Riccarton last month but failed to show up. He would require to stage an improvement on these showings to have a chance here. Tire remaining two are maiden fillies, but both are bred well enough. Evasion is by Night Raid from that good mare Mahdane, while Astarth js a full sister to Ammon Ra. However, neither has as yet done anything to recommend themselves to backers for this race.

Nearly all the candidates are likely to be seen in action to-morrow, when a reliable line will be afforded on their chances. At the present the prospects of Burnish, Mother Superior and Pin Money make most appeal. The following are those remaining in the event at present;—

Mr. N. Blackmore’s br.f. Evasion, by Night Raid—Mandane. Mr. A. Barlow’s ch.f. Superior, by Colossus—Rillet. Dr. C Blundell’s b.f. Namakia, by Gay Shield—Quinkama. Mr. S. Clark’- ch.c.
