CENTRAL SCHOOL AFFAIRS

INCREASE IN ROLL NUMBERS. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Central school committee was held last night, when there were present Messrs. F. A. Coleman (chairman), A. Dunkley, F. Potter, J. O. Turner, E. Hodder, F. S. Nicholson, A. Holder and A. Feakins (secretary.) The headmaster, Mr. D. P. Evans, reported that the attendances etc. for the term had been: Number on roll at commencement, 722; admitted during term, 63; withdawn, 39; roll at end of term, 746; average weekly roll, 7'40.09; average attendance, 603.68; percentage of attendance for term, 81.4. During the first week of the third term 27 pupils had been admitted and six withdrawn, making the present total roll 767. The percentage of attendances for the week had been 91.5, a definite improvement though well below normal. The chief causes of absence had been isolated cases of measles, influenza, severe colds, and whooping cough. He again reminded parents that only by regular attendance would some of the less intellectual pupils be sufficiently advanced to receive promotion at the end of the year. Miss L. K. Joblin, of Turakina school, had taken up her duties as assistant in place of Mrs. A. I. Okey, who received promotion to the charge of the Whangamomona school. Miss Colwell, English exchange teacher, was assisting with the infant classes, where there had been a large influx of' scholars. • On Wednesday 432 pupils from the main school attended a morning matinee performance of “Romantic New Zealand.” Arrangements were well in hand for the school fancy dress ball to be held on Thursday. Mr. G. A. Clarke had again offered his services as cricket coach for the senior boys. They were greatly indebted to him for the assistance he had given in the past, and wished to congratulate him on the success he had achieved.

The Tuahine Girl Guide troop was granted the use of the scout room one night every week, subject to suitable arrangements being made with the scouts. A letter was received from the New Plymouth Borough Council about the cost of water supply to schools. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. Coleman, Turner and Feakins, with power if necessary to organise a meeting of all the school committees in the town to consider the matter further.
