JEWS LEAVE IN PANIC
TURKISH EXCESSES FEARED.
London, Aug. 18.
: The Constantinople correspondent of the Manchester Guardian states that over 1500 Thracian Jews, in a panic over anti-Semitic excesses, have sold their possessions and fled from Constantinople. The Government has announced that it does not share the anti-Jewish feeling, and intends continuing the traditional policy of protecting Jews. The Minister of the Interior has gone to Thrace to investigate the causes of the panic and punish the guilty. The panic appears to have arisen through the Government’s removal of the Jews from the Dardanelles and Gallipoli, following the decision to fortify the areas. Irresponsible economic rivals of the Jews in Thrace took advantage of the decision, and spread rumours that the Government had turned anti-Semitic. Private enemies instigated a boycott of Jewish shops. The Premier has unequivocally announced that the Government will defend Jews as securely as other Turkish citizens. An anti-Semitic • newspaper has been suppressed, and the Government is taking steps to prevent the spread of the German anti-Semitic propaganda.
