Miss Alison White left yesterday to take up a position at Hawkes Bay. A farewell bridge party was given in her honour on Saturday night by Miss Joan Rennell, and 'MisS' Amy'Gentles entertained at bridge for her on Monday.

In order to raise'funds;for; the roy Ladies’ Golf Club a bridge and five hundred evening was held at the home of Mrs. D. Weir, Beach Street, on Monday. Pussy willows and golden marigolds decorated the room, where eight tables were occupied by. players. The annual meeting of the Te Mara Girl Guides’ Committee was held recently.' Mrs. Harris; divisional commissioner, presided. Mrs; Berridge, district commissioner, was also present. Tlie guides, under the leadership ■of Captain D. Gallagher, are progressing well. Mrs. O’Donnell and Miss L. Sampson are in charge of the brownies, which are also doing well. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Miss Champion and Mrs. Grocott, who have resigned from the committee, and also to the Methodist hall committee for its generosity in the use of the hall since the foundation of the company. The following committee was elected: President, Mrs. R. J. Kibby, vice-president, Mrs. L. Chivers and Mesdames Burke, Cook, A. Harvey, Reid and Miss Colson; secretary, Mrs. L. Chivers. Miss Harris gave an interesting talk on guiding to those present. HAWERA MONTHLY MEETING.

On Monday night at the Plunket rooms Mrs A. M. Winks presided at the monthly meeting of. the Hawera branch of the Plunket Society. In addition to routine business the reports of Mrs. A. F Beck and Mrs. Winks, delegates to the recent Dominion conference, were read and discussed. Nurse McCall’s report for the month of August was: Visits to rooms, adults 257, babies 222, older children 54; .advice by telephone, 80'; visitors, 9; visits to homes, old cases 96, new cases 7. All the new cases were wholly breast fed. In order that mor.. of the nurse’s time could be given to country visits, where in most, cases it was impossible for the busy country mother to come to .the rooms,' it was stated that it would be preferable if a greater number of town mothers called at . the .rooms. The nurse reported also that she desired mothers to bring the older children up to school age for a quarterly examination. In this way small defects were often recognised, in the early stages and enabled .prompt medical, attention to. be advised. . . ; The list of subscriptions for August included Mesdames Goodwin senr., Gomer, N. Lewes and J. Everett. The following car donations were received: Mesdames McCann 10s, Ehrler and Coutts 2s 6d.
