CRUSHED UNDER BIG LOG
DRY SKID SNAPS UNDER WEIGHT, MAN DIES FROM INJURIES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Taumarunui, Last Night. At the inquest to-day before Mr. A. S. Laird, coroner, into the death of Leonard Arthur Penny, aged 30, with a wife and family at Whangarei, who died as the result of injuries received at Owhango on Saturday, evidence was given that deceased was assisting to load a log on to a truck. Shortly after the log started to move a skid broke with the result that the log crashed to the ground at one end. When it crashed it pinned deceased to the ground, lying on his thighs. Medical evidence was given that deceased suffered from shock caused by a fracture to the pelvis, and died shortly after his admission to the Taumarunui hospital. The broken skid was dry totara, and broke at an auger hole near the edge. The verdict was that death was due to shock and internal haemorrhage.
