Mr. Dudley Pope, the Essex cricket professional, was killed in a motor-car accident, reports a London cable. Mr. J. W. Tetley, secretary to the Waihi Hospital - Board, is a visitor to New Plymouth. Dr. and Mrs. H. E. Bellringer, New Plymouth, who are at present in England, expect to remain there for several years. The former will do post-graduate medical work and the latter is interested in art.
Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., Feilding, has been transferred to Napier to fill the vacancy caused by the recent retirement of Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., reports the Press Association. In accordance with the reorganisation of magistrates’ districts the Hawke’s Bay circuit has been extended and will in future include Dannevirke.
Mr. James Payne, of the Department of the Interior, Melbourne, had been appointed Assistant Trade Commissioner in New Zealand. He will be associated with Mr. R. H. Nesbitt, the Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand. Mr. Payne has had extensive departmental experience in the Commonwealth Treasury, Home Affairs Department, Railway Construction branches in South Australia and Western Australia, Department of Defence, sales tax branch, and the Department of the Interior at Canberra, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne. He served during the war with the Australian Light Horse, and is a prominent member of the Carry-on Club, in Melbourne.
