TARANAKI GOLF RESULTS

CHAMPIONSHIPS COMMENCE GOOD SCORING AT WAIWAKAIHO. N. P. GREEN HEADS QUALIFIERS. Splendid conditions prevailed at Waiwakaiho on Saturday for the first qualifying round of the New Plymouth Golf Club championships. The weather was ideal and th'e course in excellent order. Though there were no outstanding individual efforts the general standard was much above that of other years. Two country members, N, P. Green, Stratford, and W. B. INTERMEDIATE TO K. LYE. The final game in the championship of the Manakorihi club, Waitara, was played yesterday, W. B. Glasgow defeating A. G. Wills 2 up over 36 holes. Over the first nine holes the game was all square, each going out in 38, At the end of the second nine they were still all square, Wills taking 39 and Glasgow 40. Wills squared the 18th with an eagle 3, playing his second within one foot of the pin. At the turn in the second round Glasgow was 1 up. Glasgow was 2 up at the 15th. Wills won the 16th with a four and halved the 17th, leaving Glasgow dormy one up. At the last hole each played good drives. Glasgow played his second 20 yards short. Wills’ second was green high, and through a kick to the left finished up in the swamp. Wills had to take a 'penalty. He played a good shot to the green but missed his putt, Glasgow holing out in four, to win the championship 2 up. The intermediate final between K. Lye and F. McDavitt was won by Lye 4 up and 2. Lye was 4 up at the turn in the second round. McDavitt reduced Lye’s lead to 1 up in the last nine holes. Lye was playing steady golf and the game ended at the 16th. FITZROY AND INGLEWOOD DRAW. CLOSELY CONTESTED MATCH. A team from Fitzroy visited 'lnglewood at the week-end and after a closelycontested match drew with the Inglewood club, both winning seven games, two finishing all square. Following are the details, Fitzroy players being mentioned first:— S. Clark and J. R. Sutherland v. D. Sutherland and Joblin won 4 and 2 in the morning, lost 2 and 1 in the afternoon. C. S. Wagstaff v. Faris and Gamlin won 5 and 4; won 4 and 3. MEDAL MATCH AT FITZROY. DAY OF GOOD SCORING. A special medal match was played at Fitzroy oil Saturday in aid of the P.G.A. centenary funds. Miss Carter reduced her handicap to 24 and Miss Devery reduced hers to 28. The New Plymouth Ladies’ Golf Club will play the first round of its championship at Waiwakaiho to-morrow. GOLF MATCHES AT MANAIA. FLAG GAME AND FOURSOMES. A men’s flag competition was held by the Manaia Golf Club on Saturday. 'The match was won by Mr. K. Davis, who took the flag to the 21st fairway. The final of the Armitage mixed foursomes handicap contest was also played on Saturday. Walker and Miss L. Josephson won, beating Mac Diarmid and Miss Chilcott 5 up and 4 to play.

The southern Hawke’s Bay golf championship was played on Saturday afternoon in splendid weather and was won by Miss M. Gamer (Palmerston North) who defeated Mrs. G. Colgrove (Auckland) 3 up and 1 in the final. The Tahoraite Handicap, confined to those who failed to qualify in the championship, was won by Mrs. D. Fraser (Dannevirke), who beat Mrs. Speechley (Palmerston North) 3 up and 2.
