NEW ZEALAND GOLFERS WIN

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES. MISSES KAY AND GAISFORD PLAY. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 6.30 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 9. Tlie women’s golf championship quarter finals resulted: — Miss Bessie Gaisford (New Zealand) defeated Miss Joan Hammond (N.S.W.), 1 up. Mrs. C. Robinson (N.S.W.) defeated Miss McLeish (N.S.W.), 4 and 3. Miss O. Kay (N.Z.) defeated Miss Lascelles (Melbourne), 2 and 1. Mrs. Russell (Melbourne) defeated Mrs. Trelogan (N.S.W.), 2 and 1. Miss Gaisford swung her shots away with delightful accuracy, and was 2 up at the turn. She outplayed Miss Hammond, the New South Wales champion, to the greens, but the issue was in doubt until the last hole, when Miss Hammond fluffed two shotsJike the merest novice, and Miss Gaisiord snatched a victory. Miss Kay was also pressed by the Victorian, Miss Lascelles, only one hole being won on the outward trip, the remainder being halved. Miss Kay was out in 40 and Miss Lascelles in 41. Miss Lascelles was never outdriven and hit a much lower ball than her opponent. But for two putting lapses on the homeward journey she might easily have beaten Miss Kay, who finished with 77 for 17 holes. Miss Lascelles took 79. In the semi-finals to-morrow Miss Gaisford will play Mrs. Russell and Miss Kay will play Mrs. Robinson. Commenting on the New Zealanders’ play, the Sunday Sun praises Miss Gaisford’s etiquette, and says her example might well be copied by other associates.
