CAUGHT AN OCTOPUS
FIND ON NEW PLYMOUTH BEACH. Mr. D. Steller, Gill Street, New Plymouth, went fishing for crabs on the rocks at the beach below Hobson Street yesterday and made a surprise catch of an octopus measuring six feet from tip to tip. It took Mr. Steller and two boys half an hour to secure the octopus, which put up a strong fight, to secure the shelter of a larger rock than that under which it was. found.. When the octopus was first sighted wires were placed underneath it to get it on to the rocks. It was almost as hard a job as landing a salmon. Later the octopus was placed in a bucket and it showed its great powers of suction when an attempt was made to remove it. It was caught at 3.30 p.m. yesterday and by 6 p.m. its labours and absence from the water had exhausted it and it died.
