HUGHES DEFEATS RAYNER
CONTEST AT BLENHEIM. RUGGED AND HARD-FOUGHT BOUT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Blenheim, Last Night. Archie Hughes (Auckland) outpointed Clarrie Rayner (Blenheim), New Zealand featherweight champion, in a 15 rounds lightweight contest before a packed house on Saturday. Both weighed 9.3 J. Hughes, supported by his lengthy experience and heavy punch in both hands, excelled at infighting. The bout was rugged and hard-fought, Rayner performing well to keep the margin down with solid body punching. EMPIRE HEAVYWEIGHT BOUT. 30,000 SPECTATORS EXPECTED. Jack Peterson (England) and .Larry Gains (Canada) have finished training for Monday’s bout at the White City for the Empire heavyweight title. The ’ attendance is expected to be 30,000. Petersen is to get £5OOO win, lose or draw. Gains is boxing on . a percentage of the gate receipts. Gains said he realised that defeat by Petersen meant the virtual end of his ring career so far as championship fighting is concerned.
