Dr. C. W. Kimbell, formerly of Christchurch, has been appointed resident surgical officer in the recently completed Kent and Sussex Hospital, the Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Mr. G. Valentine, assistant-director of the Dairy Division, who had been on a visit to North Taranaki, left yesterday morning on his return, to Wellington. The Opunake Harbour Board at its meeting yesterday passed a resolution of sympathy with Mr. Geo. Looney, a member of the board, in his illness, the hope being expressed that he would soon be restored to his usual health. The Rev. J. S. Murray, M.A., Queenstown, has accepted a call to become minister of the Kelburn Presbyterian Church, Wellington.

Sympathy with Mr. L. G. Andrews, New Plymouth, because of the death of his grandson, was passed by the general committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society yesterday.

Captain T. J. Wood, harbourmaster and secretary to the Waitara Harbour Board, left by train yesterday morning for Wellington, to consult a medical specialist. During his absence Captain M. Jensen will act in his stead.

A veteran Auckland business man, Mr. Frederick W. Court, died at Onehunga yesterday at the age of 94, states a Press Association message. He. was the founder of two of the city’s largest drapery businesses, John Court, Ltd., and George Court and Sons, Ltd. Born in Worcestershire, he and his brothers set up a drapery business at Birmingham, but owing to ill-health he left for New Zealand in 1886. Despite the depression he opened two shops but five years later he was obliged to retire, transferring the businesses to his brothers John and George respectively. In a long retirement he recovered his health by an openair life and by tending a large garden, and he eventually survived both his brothers.
