PRINCE HENRY ON BOARD

SUSSEX LEAVES MARSEILLES. HECTOR BOLITHO’S TRIBUTE. ) —— . ' s By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Marseilles, Sept. 5. . The Duke of Gloucester embarked on H.M.S. Sussex this morning for his tour to Australia and New Zealand. He was in civilian attire and looked extremely fit and happy. The Sussex encountered fogs immediately upon leaving Marseilles. Hector Bolitho, the New Zealand author, in an article in the Daily Mail, says: “The Duke of Gloucester’s place in the Royal lineage is particularly interesting. He has inherited many qualities of the Prince Consort 1 and King George, two men devoid of humbug and almost alarming in their allegiance to duty and rich in honour, simplicity and kindness. His sense of humour will commend him to a country where people are judged by more simple standards than in Europe. His childhood was fortunate because, a son of a large family and of the fourth generation, he was unspoiled by admiration and public curiosity. He was taught and trained as any gentleman’s son and did not receive special attention at - Eton and Cambridge.

“Though too young to go to the wa» his love of soldiering manifested itself! after 1918. He first joined the infantry but devotion to horses caused him tai transfer to the cavalry.” ; -
