"EXCEPTED HALF DAYS”

LOW ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOLS.

RECORDS BROKEN THIS WINTER. When the attendance at a primary school falls below a certain percentage of the total roll on any particular day this becomes what is known as an “excepted half day,” and does not count when, making up the average attendance for the year. These days are not uncommon during the winter in country schools in wet weather, but they seldom occur in town schools.

The recent epidemics of sickness have changed the position somewhat as regards the town schools, and during the last two months some records have been established Mr. G. A. Lyall, headmaster at Fitzroy, mentioned that the Fitzroy school had had no less than 10 of these “excepted half days,” an occurrence unpfecedented in the whole of his experience.

It is reported that the Stratford school had a similar experience, which was also unique in not only the 'school’s history but also in the experience of the headmaster, Mr. L. J. Furrie.
