FRAUD BY TWO WOMEN
MONEY FOR TRAVELLING.
MAGISTRATE GIVES WARNING.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night.
Eva May Maguire, aged 47, and her daughter, Hilda Madden, aged 24, to-day pleaded guilty to seven charges of obtaining £4 2s 6d by false pretences. The police stated that the accused had systematically answered advertisements inserted by country people who wanted domestics. The letters to reply were sent by the younger woman, who offered her services, but asked that her train fare, £5, be sent. Sums of money ranging from 2s 6d to £2 2s were sent and collected at a post office address by the mother.
The magistrate, Mr. McKean, following an appeal by the probation officer, granted accused probation and ordered restitution to be made. If further offences are disclosed as a result of the publicity this case gets I will consider whether I will impose further punishment,” the magistrate added.
