GLOUCESTER MATCH DRAWN
HONOURS TO AUSTRALIANS
HAMMOND’S FINE INNINGS
London, Aug. 3.
The cricket match between the Australians and Gloucestershire at Cheltenham resulted in a draw. The Australians declared at 308 for two wickets and dismissed Gloucestershire for 184. Fleet-wood-Smith took seven wickets for 40. The match was resumed half an hour late because of rain, which prevented play yesterday. McCabe’s 50 took 90 minutes and Kippax’s five minutes longer. The innings lasted 310 minutes. Wall opened with a wide, from which the batsmen ran two. Barnett poked a ball in Ebeling’s first over straight into the hands of Darling at mid-off. Wall pulled the muscles in his thigh and left the field. Hammond punished Grimmett and Ebeling and reached 50 in 65 minutes.
Fleetwood-Smith came on at 95 and worried Hammond before bowling him. Hammond batted 80 minutes and gave a chanceless and brilliant display. He hit seven fours. The batting from then on was uninspiring. Fleetwood-Smith troubled all the batsmen, getting some response from the wicket. He took the wickets of Allen and Neale and then towards the close brilliantly caught Goddard off his own bowling. The innings ended just before stumps were drawn. Details are:— AUSTRALIA.
