HAMMOND’S GREAT SCORING

ENGLISH COUNTY CRICKET PLAY. DERBYSHIRE BEATS YORKSHIRE. By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright London, Aug. 3. Larwood is suffering from tendon trouble in the left foot and was unable to bowl for Nottinghamshire against Hampshire in the county cricket matches. Nottinghamshire won by the narrow margin of eight runs. Despite his low scores in the tests, Hammond scored 952 runs in July. The Evening Standard says: “Hammond in the county matches met bowlers at least as good as the over-rated Australians.” Yorkshire suffered defeat at the hands of Derbyshire bn the first innings, having to follow on.

Details of matches are: — Surrey beat Sussex: Sussex in the first innings made 242, and in the second 168. Surrey in the first innings made 351 (Sandham 106, Winlaw 91; H. Hammond eight for 76), and in the second lost two for 60. Surrey won by eight wickets. Glamorgan beat Middlesex: Glamorgan in the first innings lost three for 223 and declared (E. Davies 100 not out). Middlesex in the first innings made 104 (Clay seven for 43). Glamorgan won on the first innings. Derbyshire beat Yorkshire. Derbyshire in the first innings made 345. Yorkshire in the first innings made 178 (Leyland 62; Mitchell five for J, and followed on, making 97 without loss. Derbyshire won on the first innings.

Nottinghamshire beat Hampshire. Nottinghamshire in the first innings made 109 (Cheese five for 27, Boyes five for 36), and in the second 222 (Voce 65; Boyes six for 96). Hampshire in the first innings made 206 (Gunn five for 62) and in the second 117 (Voce five for 35, Gunn five for 58). Nottinghamshire won by eight runs. Leicestershire beat Worcestershire. Leicestershire in the first innings made 493 (Pe'rry 145, Wiggington 120 not out), Worcestershire in the first innings made 246 (Walters 60) and followed on, losing eight for 240 (Quaife 99). Leicestershire won on the first innings.
