AUSTRALIA 335 FOR EIGHT

GAME AGAINST LANCASHIRE

McCABE'S FOURTH CENTURY

SPLENDID INNINGS PLAYED FAST BOWLER LOST EARLY By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 6.30 p.m. London, June 2. Australia made 335 runs for eight wickets in the first day’s play in the cricket match against Lancashire at Manchester, McCabe playing a splendid innings for 142, his fourth century of the tour. Barnett batted courageously. Tire weather was fine and the wicket in perfect condition. Australia won the toss. McCabe took strike against the fast bowler Baxter. It was a shock to see Woodfull, after forty minutes’ comfortable batting, bowled by an in-swinger. The score was then 31 for one wicket. Fifteen thousand people were present by lunch. When the score was 81 for one Brown flicked a ball into his stumps. Meanwhile McCabe had reached fifty in 95 minutes’ sedate batting. Baxter’s figures were three wickets for 38 runs when he shattered Darling’s wicket, but he then strained himself and retired. The attack thereupon became much simpler and McCabe with strong pulls reached his fourth century of the tour in 180 minutes.

Kippax, who was unnecessarily cautious, was caught at the wicket, making the score 179 for four wickets. Bromley was just beginning to liven matters when he went out to a ball which kept low. Chipperfield had several uneasy moments before he played right across a good ball. McCabe, deceived by the pace from the pitch, was clean bowled after a splendid innings of 225 minutes in which he hit fifteen hours. The score was 252 for seven wickets.

Barnett’s courageous driving and Grimmett’s shrewd patting carried the score along and the partnership added 44 before Grinuneft was bowled. Barnett continued to bat well, raising 300 in even time. Ebeling batted better than in any previous innings. Barnett’s fifty took 85 minutes. The Lancashire team is: Watson, Hopwood, Tyldesley, Iddon, Washbrook, Hawkwood, Eckersley, Farrimond, Sibbles, Booth, Baxter. Fleetwood-Smith has yet to bat for Australia. Details are:— AUSTRALIA. TEST TRIAL MATCH BEGUN 218 TO REST OF ENGLAND OPPOSITION STARTS WELL Rec. 6.30 p.m. London, June 2. A trial match between England and the Rest of England was begun to-day for the purpose of assisting the selectors in the choice of the team to play Australia in the first test. The Rest batted first and was dismissed for 218. Wyatt and Sutcliffe opened for England and scored 73 runs before stumps were drawn.

A few hours after he clinched a test place with nine hostile overs against the Rest Clark was on his way back to Northampton suffering from a strained stomach muscle. He will not take any further part in the trial and it is doubtful whether he will play in the test, leaving the selectors in a quandary. Except for Clark's first half-dozen overs it was feeble batting more than any deadliness of England’s bowling which was responsible for* the Rest’s struggling 218 runs. Verity persistently flighted the ball cleverly. Mitchell’s well spun leg breaks were accurate and he was twice unlucky when Ames fumbled stumping chances. Only three of the Rest’s batsmen appeared to be in test match class. They were Walters, Valentine and Paynter. Walters shaped best against Clark, but he twice escaped when he drove chances back to Verity. Paynter was shaping well before he played on. Fames in four-over periods bowled with some life, making the ball lift. He should have had Wyatt caught early at first slip. Wyatt afterwards drove and cut attractively. Sutcliffe plodded with typical caution. Details are:— THE REST. First Innings. The Australians’ reply to Surrey’s total of 475 runs for seven wickets was 629, and the game was drawn. When stumps were drawn Surrey had lost two for 162 in their second innings. After Australia’s total had passed 600 in 385 minutes Gover obtained two more successes, bowling Grimmett and getting O’Reilly caught behind the wicket. Oldfield played an excellent forcing innings. The side batted 120 minutes. Two hours were left to play when

Squires and Gregory commenced Surrey’s second innings. With 44 on Grimmett trapped Squires. A spiritless match dragged on wearily. Gregory and Barling were sound against the lackadaisical attack. Brown’s big hitting enlivened the closing stages, in which Kippax and Bromley were given bowling practice. Detailed scores:— AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
