“BROWN’S BOXING PROWESS

MATCHES IN ENGLAND. UNIMPRESSIVE AGAINST TOMA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) London, April 30. At Manchester last Monday, Brown, because of his cocksuredness, might have met with a similar fate to that which befell Carpentier in his tragic affair with Siki. For if Toma were no great shakes, he was dead game, and never ceased trying to bring over a punch which, if landed, would have turned the tide completely in his favour. I shall always believe that, if Brown had been more thorough, he would have beaten Midget Wolgast. Perhaps Brown is waiting until he will stake his titles against Tom Pardoe to make a full revelation of all his qualities. He need not be warned that, if he carries himself as he did against Toma, he will court defeat. Even an entirely serious Jackie Brown will probably be unpleasantly surprised by Pardoe. I itch to see their fight. What, may I inquire, has happened to Mickey McGuire and Ginger Foran? It seems not so long ago that McGuire set us all by the ears by knocking out Young Perez, the then flyweight champion of the world, and we well recollect that ha has defeated Jackie Brown. News of his knock-out by sAngelmann at the beginning of the week was, to me, something of a bombshell. And I was astonished that Foran, of whom I thought ever so highly, was forced to take the count from Nipper Hampson. I must take a look at Hampson. His folk at Barnsley tell me that he is a champion for sure. Maybe, but is he quite ready for a fight with Dick Corbett, who, I understand, he is keen to meet? Although Larry Gains failed to knock out Hower, the German champion, his victory over the tough Teuton is a considerable feather in his cap. There was some talk about matching Gains against Ben Foord. Perhaps it is just as well that the South African has decided to return home. At present he would have small chance against Gains. I wonder who Gains will fight next. I am told that Jeff Dickson was prepared to put him on at his next Albert Hall promotion against Cook, but the terms offered were not thought to be good enough. To date nothing definite has been fixed in the matte of Cook and McCorkindale. It seems as though we shall have to wait until June for the next heavyweight fight of first-rate importance. Then Harvey will go to war against Petersen, who, I am pleased to learn, is his complete physical self again.
