INGLEWOOD’S LATE FORM

RUGBY IN RAIN AT MANAIA

FINAL RALLY GIVES EIGHT POINTS.

WAIMATE’S LEAD REDUCED TO 4.

Waimate defeated Inglewood at Manaia by 12 to 8 after Inglewood had made a rally in the final ten minutes to reduce the margin. Failing on the verge of a try earlier, Inglewood might have altered the position if fewer mistakes in tactics and less feeble handling had been shown in the first half. The team, lacking three of its best players, showed many weaknesses, and these were turned to advantage by Waimate, although the latter’s performance was by no means up to its best standard. Steady rain fell during most of the game, and considering the greasy ground and ball the game was a fair exhibition. The preliminary stages were quiet and it was not until the second half that real excitement was aroused. The first score was from a mark by J. Paterson, who goaled in an easy position. The next was well on in the second spell when Gulliver completed an attacking movement. The next try was a gift following a serious blunder. Shaw was defending against a breakaway by Gulliver, and evidently lost his sense of direction as he swung round and kicked towards his own undefended corner. The Waimate forwards had a clear fol-low-up and Baldwin did *ot lose the opportunity to run in and touch down without opposition. Gargan scored the final try for Waimate after playing a vigorous game all the way. The tide immediately turned in favour of Inglewood, and in face of a strong attack I. McDonald made a mistake at the comer to enable the Inglewood pack to swing in and put Waimate in difficulties, S. O’Byrne scoring after several exciting interchanges. Inglewood was yet to make another attack, and soon Corkill scored, Shaw adding the points as the final whistle sounded. The teams were:—

Waimate: I. McDonald; K. McDonald, Hill, A. Hughes; L. Whalen, Surgenor; J. Paterson; Murfitt, G. Baldwin, C. Bourke, M. Burke, Hikaka, R. Gulliver, Gargan, Sutton. Inglewood: L. Corlett; E. O’Byme, S. Mcßoberts, S. Hutchens; . J. Shaw, B. Corkill; M. Sutton; R. Arthur, S. O’Byme, J. Corlett, V. Scanlon, D. Hogan, Irving, Baxter, Corney. A few attacks were seen in the opening stages, each spending itself fruitlessly until Corlett forced a Waimate kick over the line. Surgenor was away in a handy position but was recalled for an infringement. Then Paterson goaled his mark. Paterson running into the scrum gave Corkill a penalty kick with which he missed. Gargan off-side gave L. Corlett a penalty kick with which be failed to goal owing to the greasiness of the ball. L. Whalen and Hill got away, the latter knocking-on when he had good prospects. C. Bourke and M. Burke led a strong attack to compel a force after Corkill had shown good defence. Baxter and O’Byme got away but Waimate’s backs spoiled the attack and L. Whalen kicked to Shaw, who broke away, Hutchens failing to take a high pass. Shaw marked but failed with a close drop-kick. Inglewood showed a disposition to get off-side and gave Waimate another penalty, the kick being sent to near the other end. Gargan offside gave Inglewood a kick at half-way. The forwards went to the attack and S. O’Byme took a speculator near the line, Hill forcing. Inglewood then made an attack with E. O’Byme dribbling merrily down the side-line until the ball went into touch. Shaw, Mcßoberts and Hutchens handled in neat passing and made the best attack of the game, the ball finally reaching touch. Corkill sent a long kick to I. McDonald, who handled and kicked well to the line. K. McDonald also gave useful service in line-kicks. C. Bourke went through supported by Surgenor and Hughes, but L. Corlett resisted the attacks, and play was returned to the other end. to give Waimate an off-side penalty. B. Corkill marked in face of a rush in front of his own posts and found the line. Inglewood was harried and Waimatfe made a dangerous attack, the rush being well held by the forwards packing round. An offside gave Waimate a penalty in front of the posts, but Paterson failed. In view of the rain play was resumed immediately after the change over. Inglewood's attacks brightened and hard scrums took place on Waimate’s line, Gargan finally getting the ball away. J. Corlett and Comey made a fast rush but Waimate’s line was unshaken. Failure to use the ball was seen respectively in both teams; handling was difficult owing to the greasy state of the ball. Waimate carried a loose attack to the line, but Inglewood rallied and made a lucky save after a scrummage on the line. Inglewood soon forced and gained relief. Hill and K. McDonald endeavoured to work the line but failed, and in a further attack Gulliver scored. Baldwin’s kick failed to rise. Gulliver endeavoured to get through but Shaw’s mistake gave Baldwin an easy try. Hikaka failed to goal. Play became exciting when the Inglewood backs resisted an attack by Hill and gave an exhibition of clever handling right to the line. It was Baldwin who saved. This rally made one wonder what would have happened had the ground been dry. Both teams performed smart work and Inglewood’s move was deserving of a score, Another- exciting burst came when Surgenor went through for several others to handle in a brisk encounter. The attack was continued to enable L. Whalen to pass on to Gargan, who dived over to score in a clear space. He missed with his own kick. K. McDonald failed in an attempt to kick a field goal. Hikaka, Whalen, Hill and K. McDonald ran into a prominent position, but McDonald was sent over the side line. Inglewood carried the attack for I. McDonald to miss, but a good follow-up gave S. O’Byme a try. Sutton missed with the kick. In a further sweep along the field Inglewood surprised Waimate and Corkill scored for Shaw to convert. Waimate 12 Inglewood 8 Mr. J. F. Kiley refereed,
