SMALL FARMS SCHEME
ESTATE NEAR TE AWAMUTU.
HOMES BEING ERECTED. Te Awamutu, May 29. Good progress is being made with the work of providing living accommodation on the 3000-acre property known as the Ellicott Estate, at Parawera, recently acquired by the Government under the small farms scheme. Already there are about 20 settlers, with their wives and about 30 children, and the men, under experienced supervision, have been erecting their homes and clearing portions of the land for gardens and crops, preparatory to grassing at the proper season. A water supply pipeline is being laid to provide ample fresh water for the community, and meantime a small spring near the central building has been cleaned out, and is supplying all the present needs. The urgent need just now is a school for the children, as the nearest school is from, two to three miles away, and the youngsters have no means of conveyance, even if that school, which is under the Native Department, were large enough to accommodate them.
The settlers all seem to be keenly desirous of establishing themselves, and most of them have hopes of some day acquiring the freehold, with comfortable homes and good dairy herds.
