WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETINGS' OF BRANCHES. Taranaki Executive: The executive committee -of the Taranaki District Federation of Women’s Institutes met at Normanby on Monday. Lengthy business was transacted, and it was decided to send the president to represent the federation at the Dominion Conference next July. Arrangements were made for the forming of committees to arrange for Drama Festivals throughout Taranaki. Those present were Mesdames W. Kaye and W. J. Smith (Inglewood), A. Morey and A. Whitehead (Waitara), W. H. Walton (Patea), C. S. Smith (Opunake), McAsey (Te Roti), T. J. Allan, Normanby, Misses Coleman (Ngaere) and Free, Normanby. At the conclusion of the meeting the members were entertained at tea by Misses Gane and Allan.

Rahotu Branch: The monthly meeting was held on Thursday afternoon, Mrs. Butler presiding. Many articles made from old stockings were exhibited by Mesdames T. Wilcox, P. Wilcox, C. Field, W. Butler, P. Kitchenman, G. Wells and P. Heillem. The judges were Mesdames Hughson and H. Simmyons and the steward was Mrs. T. Putt. Mrs. Paul Wilcox was awarded first prize for a small girl’s jumper made from old grey stockings. Afternoon tea was provided.

Mokoia-Whakamara: The monthly meeting of the Mokoia-Whakamara Women’s Division was held at Whakamara recently. After the business of the meeting a display of “something new made out of something old” was held. Prize winners were: Miss Kissling (slippers) 1, Miss Hopper (dress) 2; unusual articles, Mrs. Scott (painted stone jar), 1, Mrs. Potter (rubber purse) 2. A floral display was given by Mrs. H. R. Scott.

Tarata: The Tarata Institute held its May meeting in the hall. Mrs. Standish presided over a good attendance. The programme was enjoyed by all. Upper Mangorei: The Upper Mangorei Institute held its monthly meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Jackson presided over a good attendance of members and two visitors. After the business four new. members were admitted to the branch. A demonstration on how to make netting, in cotton for edging linen and in string for nets, bags and hammocks was given by Mrs. M. Norman. The hand-made handkerchief competition attracted some good work and the winners were Mrs. Radford 1, Mrs. Jackson 2, Mrs. West 3. Mrs. J. Reid was the judge. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Jamieson, Pearce and Knauf.
