REMOVING CRUISER’S TAILSHAFT, REPAIRS NECESSARY FOR DUNEDIN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, May 22. Considered to be the most difficult marine engineering job undertaken in Calliope dock, the work of drawing the tailshaft from the cruiser Dunedin was started this morning. A bearing play of three inches at the stern of the shaft was discovered on Saturday, and tenders for the repair were quickly called. The woik will entail the removal of the shaft of 72 feet, weighing 13 tons, lifting it to the ground level, ..'ansporting it 150 yards to a machine shop, and an inspection on Auckland’s biggest lathe. A new gunmetal sleeve to replace the one which is worn deeply must be sweated c and trued up.

It is expected that the floating crane will have to be used, working from outside the dock gate. The cruiser was to have indocked by the end of May, but is not now expected to be refloated before June 9.
