WHAT IS A CULL COW?
definition required.. THE QUESTION OF BRANDING. “What is the definition Of a cull cow? That is a question that needs decision before any steps are taken to make branding of all Cull Cows placed in thO sale yards compulsory,” said Mr. A. R. Alpe, president of the Uruti branch of the Fanners’ Union, On Friday night. He Said a remit would probably be brought before the provincial conference on the subject, and he would like some instruction from the meeting how to vote. What might be regarded as a cull cow in a high-producing herd might be regarded as a high-producing cow ift a poor herd. He thought s Cull cow was one producing less than the Dominion average of about 2001 b Of fat. ' ■ Mr. W. Lawrence said that any cow producing under 3061 b should be classed gs a cull cow. Then any farmer purchasing a cow not classed as a cull would be sure of purchasing a good producer. A member asked what would be the position where a man did not test his cows, as a cow Could hardly be classed as a cull until the herd had been tested. ' ■ The matter was left to the discretion of the delegates, it being recognised that the idea, though difficult to carry Out, was intended to protect farmers.
