This is probably the result of the entrance Of teams from the various, branches of /the Farmers’ Union in the aiiiiual shooting Competition that has been arranged by the Dominion executive of the Union for the G.A.C. Shield for tome years. _ -It is only two years since the Nortn Taranaki executive took the matter up, and the first yeaj- saw Okato annex the shield. This year, though the Dominion results are not yet known, Okato, which has again topped the score for North Taranaki, appears to have a chance Of retaining the shield. It is recognised that Okato’s success is largely due to the fact. that the district possesses good shots who have every opportunity of keeping in f6rm, because the district possesses » well-equipped rifle range. . . Since the first Competition a rifle club has been formed at Toko and a range has been opened there. In the last competition the Toko team showed it had benefited by practice. Several other districts, including Uruti arid Okoke, arb considering the formation Of Clubs. Major A. E. Conway and Sergeant-Major Bell bn, Friday Visited those two districts ahd inspected various suggested sites for a range. They cbnSider there should be no difficulty in securing a suitable, safe range in each district. Major Conway and Sergeant-Major 8611 attended the annual meeting of the Uruti branch of the Farmers’ Union by invitation on Friday night, when Major CbnWay .explained the steps, tb be takeii to form a rifle dub and the requirement, of the authorities. The district should have a rifle club, remarked the chairman, Mr. A. R. Alpe, not only to Create an interest for the young- men of the district in a clean sport but alto because it gave an bppbf-, tunity of creating new friendships. It was decided to call a special meeting to consider the formation of a rifle dub ifi the district - Major Conway congratulated the district on having established two 'sections of the Queen Alexandra Mounted Rifles. He asked those present to do all they could to assist the members of the sections by making it easy for ihem to get away to parades and to the camp.
