LONDON FRUIT MARKETS
GOOD DEMAND FOR APPLES. HEAVY SUPPLIES MARKETED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 6.30 p.m. London, April 28. The demand for apples continues to be good. Prices do not show any improvement, although recent arrivals of Australian matured apples are better coloured than earlier shipments. Australian supplies are fairly light, but no fewer than six stearhers from New Zealand have arrived within a fortnight, bringing about 225,000 boxes. These had to be marketed quickly, as many were in some forward condition. American apples also are in large supply and are selling cheaply. These two factors have prevented any rise in prices. Good supplies of Australian and New Zealand pears are being marketed, mostly at satisfactory prices, especially for South Australians, which are in excellent condition, but some Victorians are wasty and over-ripe. South African arrivals are declining, and as the summer is approaching the prospects of pears looks good.
