DESPERATE MEN SHOT DEAD
SHERIFF TAKES QUICK ACTION. CONVICTS FROM PENITENTIARY. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 6.30 p.m. San Francisco, April 28. While 5000 officers are fruitlessly searching for John Dillinger, the notorious gangster, the sheriff of the southern California community showed how supposedly desperate men can be handled. Yesterday two convicts escaped from San Quentin penitentiary, the first such break for many years. Officials quickly broadcast a warning that they, “next to Dillinger” were the most dangerous criminals at large in America. On their flight southward, however, the sheriff recognised them. He quickly drew a revolver and killed both instantly.
