WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Patea: A practical lesson in the growing of chrysanthemums was given members of‘the garden circle of the Patea Women's Institute this week by Mr W. D. Knowles. Members were afforded an opportunity of visiting Mr Knowles’ garden at Taumata Park, Whenuakura, where an interesting talk on - chrysanthemum cultivation was given alongside the beds of chrysanthemums that have produced some ot the finest blooms grown in the district. Mr Knowles dealt with proved methods ,of culture. The Misses Knowles entertained at afternoon tea with musical items.

Upper Mangorei: The annual meeting of the branch was held on Saturday afternoon, there being a good attendance. The president (Mrs Balsom) submitted a report that showed the year had been successful socially and financially, with a fair balance-sheet. The inaugural meeting was held on April 27, 1933, when Mrs Kaye, the Taranaki organiser, addressed the meeting. Ten meetings had been held during the year, and the interest manifested at the beginning was well maintained. Five demonstrations were given, one on home nursing, and two travel talks. A “bring and buy” afternoon was held and proved a financial success. Altogether there were nine competitions, the points prize being awarded Mrs Jamieson and a consolation prize to Mrs West. In closing, the president thanked all members for their co-operation, and the secretary especially for her untiring help during the term of office. The following officers were re-elected: President, Mrs Jackson; vice-presidents, Mesdames Balsom and Knauf; secretary, Mrs Johnston (re-elected); treasurer, Mrs Jamieson (re-elected); competition stewards, Mesdames Balsom, Gleye, Jlawke and Spencer. A delegate was appointed to attend the Federation Group meeting at Inglewood on Friday 27th. Afternoon tea brought the meeting to a close.

Tariki: The monthly .meeting of the Tariki Women’s Institute was held on Saturday .afternoon, the president, Mrs Kerr, presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting was opened with community singing, led by Mrs Jemison. At the conclusion of the business Mrs Southam, of New Plymouth, gave a most interesting demonstration on tapestry work, some beautiful pieces of work being displayed. Mrs H. Knowles expressed thanks to Mrs Southam on behalf of the members. During the afternoon the cup donated by Mr W. Chapman for the winner of the potato growing competition, was presented to Mrs Jemison by the president. Mrs Jemison suitably responded. Mrs G. Knowles and Miss Ella Knowles were also presented with points prizes for last year’s competitions. The competition for the afternoon was a Madiera cake for senior members, and rock buns for the juniors. The prize winners were as follow: Seniors, Mrs Jemison 1, Mrs Kerr 2, Mrs G. Knowles 3. Juniors, over 13 years, Ella Knowles 1, Jean Jemison 2. Juniors under 13 years, Hazel James 1, Dorothy Blair 2, Sylvia Manning 3. “Labour Saving Hints” brought forth some very good ideas. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames L. Hollis and D. Hildred, assisted by junior members, Hazel James and Dorothy Blair.

Opunake: The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held on Friday, April 13. Mrs Kaye, president of the Taranaki Federation, was present and gave an address on the aims and ideals of the institute. A demonstration on wool work was given by Mrs R. Ritchie and Mrs C. A. Smith exhibited a wool rug. Enjoyable items, pianoforte and vocal, were given by Miss Mackay, of Otakeho. Hostesses were Mesdames Wilkinson and Cook.

Kakaramea: The monthly meeting of the Kakaramea Institute was held on April 20. Mrs Ramsbottom presided. One new member, Mrs Meharry, was elected. Mrs Ramsbottom and Mrs Morris, were appointed delegates to attend the Taranaki Federation meeting. Preliminary arrangements were made for the Institute’s first birthday and the following committee was formed to arrange the social programme: Mesdames Hall, Illingworth and Hodge and Miss A. Huston. The competition for the best jar of plum jam drew a layge number of entries and resulted as follows: Mrs Hodge 1, Mrs Hall 2. Miss A. Fowler 3. Mrs W. Kaye was judge. Mrs Kaye gave an address on the spirit of womens institutes and their aims, and congratulated members on the remarkable w’ay the branch had progressed in less than a year. Items were given by Miss Gertrude Hall and Miss Annie Hall. The hostesses were Mesdames Presland, McAsey and C. Hamblyn.
