URUTI DISTRICT NEWS

PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Mrs. Vincent and Mrs. Whiting, of Kaponga and Hamilton respectively, have returned home after spending a holiday with Mrs. Tonkin, Pehu. Miss Kathleen Walker has returned to Wanganui after spending a month with Mrs. George Stevens. Mr. M. Honeyfield has returned from Hamilton.

Mrs. Campbell Rigg has returned'from New Plymouth. Mr. and Mrs. Les Hill has returned to New Plymouth after spending the weekend with Mrs. D. D. Masker. They are accompanied by Miss Jean Musker. Mr. Arch. Miller, who has been indisposed, has returned home. Mr. Colin Chadwick, who spent some weeks with Mr. John Tonkin, has returned to Hawera. Mr. Sherwood Butt, who attended the MacLean—Nathan wedding at Palmerston North, has returned to Uruti.

Basketball Club Formed. About 15 Uruti girls attended the meeting to discuss the formation of a basketball club at Uruti. Miss Kath Watson was subsequently elected captain and Miss Joan Oxenham secretary. Practises will be commenced immediately and fixtures will later be arranged to play other teams.

Hiking Party to Pukearuhe. The Rev. J. Templar escorted a party of 20 school children who hiked to Pukearuhe during the v/eek-end. On the Pukearuhe side they were met by Mr. Eric Haselton, who accompanied them to a well-known Maori redoubt and gave the children an interesting talk on topics of local Maori history. The Uruti Hall Society’s series of euchre parties has commenced. Prizes were won on Friday night by Mrs. Oxenham 1, Miss L. Kapinga 2, Mrs. A. Johnson booby. prize; Mr. J. Dickey 1, Mr. W. Copeman 2, .Mr. George Baker consolation. Supper was served by a committee of ladies.

Military Ball at Uruti. The recently-formed territorial group at Uruti held a very successful ball on Wednesday night. Many visitors were present and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Music was supplied by Rowe’s orchestra. Under the supervision of Miss Joan Oxenham a ladies’ committee attended to the supper.

Makino Stream Bridge. The Makino Stream bridge has been completed, thus giving lorry or car access to the settlers on the Rerekino and Makino Roads. One settler who had previously to pack his wool in bags on account of the narrow bridge has this season sent 56 bales direct by lorry. The bridge was built by Mr. W. Dowman.
