GELIGNITE FOR FISH
MAN’S HAND BLOWN OFF. PROSECUTION AT WHANGAREI. Whangarei, March 19. A plea of guilty was'entered by Lyle John Spiers, of Ngunguru, who was charged in the Police Court to-day with being in possession of gelignite for an unlawful purpose, and with using gelignite at Ngunguru on January 25 to catch or destroy fish, contrary to the Fisheries Act, 1908.
Senior-Sergeant Powell said that on the date in question accused, with his brother and a party, went out fishing. Accused had hidden three plugs of gelignite in his shirt. When out at sea he began fishing by himself from the dinghy and used the gelignite. This proved very disastrous, as his right hand was blown off at the wrist.
The magistrate, Mr. G. N. Morris, said he did not propose to add any punishment to what defendant had. already suffered. “I quite agree this is a very serious offence, punishable by imprisonment,” he added, “but no doubt accused has learnt his lessbn. He will be convicted and ordered to pay the costs;”
