CHESS AND DRAUGHTS
NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB . MEETS. . At the annual meeting of the New Plymouth Chess and Draughts Club Mr. J. S. S. Medley presided over a fair attendance. .. . •' The report and balance. sheet disclosed a small credit balance .after meeting all expenses. During the season several tourneys were held, the results of which were as follow: Senior championship, Messrs. Cooper and Barnes came . out with the best scores and it was decided for a play-off between these two players. This had hot yet taken place, but would most likely be decided after the opening of the coming season. Junior championship, Mr. G. H. Butler won the championship. A handicap tournament to which Mr.' Medley donated the sum of 10s for the winner, proved interesting, a* up to the last Messrs. McCann, Gibbings and Barnes all had equal chances of winning the prize. Mr. Gibhings finally came but on top. There was .also a round of ladder games, Mr. Barnes securing the best tally. - ~ , . The season finished up with a .lightning tourney, 18 ■■ members taking part. The honour of winning. the most num* ber of games went to Mr. H. Wolfe. Supper was donated by the president of the club, Mr. R. A. Bent. , The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. J. Bruce; president, Mr. R. A. Bent; vice-presidents, Messrs; Medley, Rutherfurd, Cooper and Fanner; committee, Messrs. Gibbings, McCann, Rogers ' and Honnor; joint secretaries and treasurers, Messrs. Wolfe and Barnes; custodian, Mr. A. R. Gibson. - It was decided to commence the 1934. season on April 3, and to hold club nights every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Mr. Medley again donated trophies lot the junior - and handicap.
