GOLDEN WINGS’ DEFEAT

SOME DISPUTE THE VERDICT CHATHAM’S FINE PERFORMANCE. LIMARCH SCORES VICTORY. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 6.30 p.m. Sydney, April .1The A.J.C, autumn meeting opened at Randwick on Saturday in dull, showery weather. The track was consequently slow. The attendance was 45,000. Silver Scorn was warmly supported in the Autumn Plate and after running in a forward position throughout the race appeared likely to make the face interesting in the final stages, but was unable to withstand the fast finishing effort of Peter Pan.

The New Zealand-bred colt Sir John, considered to be the outstanding colt of the season, gave an inglorious display in the Sires’ Produce Stakes. Commencing on the outside of the field the colt never appeared to be going kindly. He apparently found the soft track unpalatable. Limarch, owned by the Auckland sportsmen Messrs E. R. Davis and O. Nicholson, compensated New Zealanders for the narrow defeat of Golden Wings in the Doncaster Handicap. Running a length behind Hall Mark, Limarch finished strongly in the final. stages and secured a victory from Blixten by a head. Golden Wings gave a taste of his galloping ability in the Doncaster. Taking a prominent position early he remained in charge Until a few strides from the post, where the gallant Chatham under the heavy burden of 10.4 poked his nose in front. Peter Jackson enhanced his Sydney Cup prospects by a capital finishing effort in th® Autumn Plate. The results are:—

FIRST BRUSH HURDLES. ABBOT’S LAD, 10.11 (McMenamln) 1 MASTER COLIN, 10.0 (Scholl) 2 HUSTLER, 9.3 (Alderidge) . 3 Ten started. Abbot’s Lad took up the running shortly after the barrier rise and thereafter remained in front, running home an untroubled winner by three lengths. Time, 3m. 4825.

Time, Im. 28s. , « i The Sunday papers state that, Randwick patrons had a disastrous day yesterday, due largely to the heavy going, which was reflected in the slow times recorded in all races. Rogilla’s indifferent performance, Peter Pan’s return to form, Limarch’s sterling win and Sir John’s poor showing in the mud are the main topics of conversation among racing men. Chatham ran a sterling race and was cheered lustily after the Doncaster Handicap. A large percentage of racegoers insisted that this plucky fellow, despite his staggering weight and the heavy course, would triumph over the brilliant Rogilla over a mile, as the latter is usually a slow beginner. Admirers of the New Zealander Golden Wings really thought that gelding had won the Doncaster. His jockey, Ellis, was astounded when he saw the judge’s placings favouring Chatham. Many people declare Golden Wings was extremely unlucky to lose the verdict after such a dazzling run in the straight and leading the field so long.
