RECORDS IN TWO RACES

SEVERAL GOOD FINISHES SIDELIGHTS ON THE RACING. ONLY TWO FAVOURITES WIN. (By wire—Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night.

Fast times were a feature of the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting at Ellerslie to-day, Thespis running a course record of Imln. 39 3-5 s in the Brighton Hurdles and Jonathan a race record of Imin. 37 l-5s in the Easter Handicap. Golden Hair and Burnish were the only favourites to score, but most of the winners were well supported, with the exception of Hushing, who returned a double-figure dividend. Burnish’s supporters showed a loss when she dead-heated with Gay Blonde.

Golden Halt All the Way. Only three started in the Great Northern Oaks, and Golden Hair justified her pronounced favouritism by leading all the way and winning hands down from Rust, who cut Melisande out of second by half a length. The field took Imln. 54 l-5s to run the first mile, but the pace was good over the last half mile, which Golden Hair ran in 47 2-5 s with her rider sitting still at the finish. The three runners were all chestnuts and were all sired by horses owned by Mr. G. M. Currie. The pool on the race amounted to £1,435, compared with £487 last year, when Silver Scorn won from two others.

Master Brieriy’s Good Finish. Master Briefly was responsible for a sterling performance in winning the President’s Handicap with 9.7 in 2m. ss. equalling Nightly’s course record. Master Briefly was second to last until about half a mile from home, but he made a brilliant run Over the last three furlongs and won well from the lightweight Gay Broney, who looked like winning when he drew clear after taking the lead from Psychologist about three furlongs from home. The favourite Knight of Australia finished on to run third after being a good way back most of the way. Sunny Sky ran a good race for fourth, and Epigram, Desert Star and Royal Artist were right up behind her. Baroscope tired after appearing a place possibility at the turn, and King March failed to run up to form, being a trifle pretty. Knight Of Australia, Royal Artist and King March should all be Improved by the race.

Course Record for Hurdles. A course record of 3min. 39 3-5 s was established by Thespis, second favourite to Callamart, in winning the Brighton Hurdles from end to end. Thespis was always five to six lengths clear over the last mile, and although he ran down the last fence he won by five lengths from Wee Pat, with Snow Prince three lengths away third and Simeon fourth. Thespis jumped with more confidence than for some time and the only blemish on his display was his poor jump at the last fence. Wee Pat was always one of the closest of the field and stayed better than Snow Prince, who was with her at the home tum. Simeon did best of the others, who were well beaten. Callamart fell when going well seven furlongs from home. Carlaris Was right out of it when he toppled over at the second to last fence. Biform clouted a couple of fences hard, losing Several lengths when appearing a place possibility at the second to last fence. Prince of Orange lacked the necessary condition, but he is coming on. Golden Wedding was hopelessly left and was pulled up after going a mile.

Jonathan’s Brilliance. It was with a brilliant finishing run that the third favourite Jonathan won the Easter Handicap in the race record of Imin. 37 1-5. Imamint reached the front quickly and led into the straight from Red Manfred, Curie, Gay Sheila, Pomp and Star Artist. A furlong from the post Imamint on the rails and Pomp on the outside were struggling hard for supremacy when Jonathan dashed up between them about 50 yards from the post to win by three-quarters of a length. The judge was unable to separate Imamint and Pomp, who were a dead-heat for second. Red Manfred was fourth, followed by Lady Spy, Gay Sheila, Curie and King’s Archer. Thera were ten horses in front of Jonathan at the halfmile post, and his performance was full of merit - Imamint made a great attempt to win all the way, and Pomp ran his best race in a handicap event. Red Manfred and Curie both made fine showings, being right in it all the way up the straight. Gay Sheila lost her position at the turn but made another effort in the straight. She appeared to be troubled with soreness. Golden Chant was prominent to the turn and then faded out. Dead-heat in Straight Only four started in the Great North-

ern Champagne Stakes, but the small field was more than competed for by the fine contest between Burnish and Gay Blonde, who ran a dead-heat for first Burnish was troublesome at the post and Gay Blonde was first out from 7" c+art Burnish was m front at the end o?a Mong and led Gay Blonde S * length and a half to the Blonde then challenged and fit'; <«»«. buiOathedistance. However Burr.ush came again under the whip and judge was unable to separate them as they crossed the line four lengths ahead of Pm Money. It was a fine race between two well matched fillies.

Riotous Jumps Dashingly. The second favourite Riotous scored a decisive Win in the Mangers SteepleThe rac* resolved into a duel between Riotous and Brown Abbey, and it appeared as if the latter would win when he drew out several lengths going up the hfll he Scond time. However Riotous — Abbey. Patutahi, who pulled up lame, was three lengths away third. Zane Grey fell to the second round. Riotous is a dashing jumper, and Brown Abbey is also a very promising steeplechaser.

Lady Kyra Promising. Coronilla was a better favourite than Lady Kyra for the Onslow Stokes, but after leading for five furlongs she Was beaten into third place. Capjto ran up to Coronilla at-the distance, where Lady Kyra attempted to go between them but was disappointed. Lady Kyra then securM an epenlng on »» through to win well from Capris, who defeated Coronilla by three-quarters of a length! Lady Kyra is a very lazy and contented filly and looks like being decidedly useful. She is one of the first of Lord Warden’s progeny to race and has won twice. Hushing Surprises.

An outsider, Hushing, was responsible for a surprise in defeating the favourite, Senior in the Eden Handicap." Solomon made most of the running from Hushing and Mungacre. Hushing assumed command below the distance to win from the fast finishing Senior. Mungacre was a neck away third and D'Artagnan was a close fourth, followed by King Musk, Wee Musk, Expectancy and Loombination. Hushing paid a good double-figure dividend. Senior struck some trouble early and came from the ruck. He was going very fast at the end. Mungacre and D’Artagnan both ran good races, the latter having none the best of the luck. King Musk was closer at the finish than at any other stage, coming from a long way back. Solomon failed only in the last furlong.
