SYDNEY FIRE DAMAGE £5000
HAT MILLS UPPER FLOOR GUTTED. FEAR OF THE WALL COLLAPSING. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. Sydney, March 30. A fire in Merrett’s hat mills, Surry Hills, did damage to the extent of £5OOO. The roof fell in on the gutted upper floor and machinery in the lower storeys and stock suffered severely from water. About 100 employees escaped safely but the adjoining premises were in danger for a time owing to fears that the factory walls would collapse.
