FAMOUS SPORTING CLUB
ROYAL PATRONAGE WITHDRAWN. CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT RESENTED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, March 27. The fate of the Ranelagh Club, the world’s most famous and most exclusive social and sporting club, is in the balance. The King’s patronage has been withdrawn and every member’ of the Royal Family has severed his connection with the club. The real crux of the trouble is the intimation of the new chairman, Mr. Holland Martin, to shareholders that, in addition to being the best in London, the club must also earn dividends, which is distasteful to many members, reducing the club to the level of an American roadhouse.
On top of this controversy hangs the threat that London’s new city council will take over the grounds of the Ranelagh and Hurlingham Clubs for housing purposes.
