TARANAKI RIFLE MEETING
CHAMPIONSHIP SHOOTING BEGUN. WANGANUI. WINS TEAMS’ MATCH.
Nearly 60 riflemen from districts between Eketahuna and Te Kuiti participated in the opening matches of the Taranaki Rifle Association’s annual meeting at New Plymouth yesterday. Although the weather was fine, shooting conditions were extremely bad, a rear right fishtail wind being a considerable handicap. Several remarkably fine scores, however, were recorded. t Eleven teams participated in the teams match, which was won by Wanganui. Okato A was second and New Plymouth A third. Considering the conditions, Rifleman E. J. King’s score of 101 in the team’s match was an outstanding performance. , The number of competitors will be increased to-day with the arrival of a team frfom Kaponga. Several wellknown marksmen, including the New Zealand champion service shot, Rifleman E. Farley, and two New Zealand exKing's Prizemen, Riflemen D. Roots and E. J. King, are attending the meeting. The meeting is being conducted under the supervision of Captain F. L. Hartnell, president of the Taranaki Association. Lieutenant S. Hartnell is range officer, Mr. C. H. Moore signal officer and Mr. J. Ramson trench officer. Office work is in charge 'of Mr. E. Armitage, with Messre • T. Corkill and H. Insult as assistants. Refreshments are being provided by a ladies’ committee under Mrs. Hartnell. ' Details are:—Service Match: F. J. Soler 47, £1; S. G. Higgs 40, 12s 6d; G. H. Taylor 35, and R. Benton 34, 10s each; J.
