LEAGUE ATHLETIC EVENTS
WESTERN PARK MEETING. Good fields faced the starter in all events at the League Athletic Club s evening sports at Western Park, New Plymouth, last evening. Good finishes were the order. An unfortunate spill occurred in the C grade half mile cycle handicap, necessitating A. Warren requiring medical attention. Following are the results: — A grade one mile cycle handicap: T. Haw (70yds) 1, G. Plucke (80) 2, A. E. Wood (120) 3. Seven started. Parker off scratch failed to . make any impression on the leaders and withdrew with a lap to go. Haw proved too strong in the final sprint and won comfortably by a length and a-half, with Wood two lengths behind Plucke in third place. Time, 2m 24 3-ss. A grade, two mile cycle handicap: J. Foote (30yds) 1, C. Lehrke (90) 2, T. Haw (60). 3. Nine started. Foote rode a well-judged race to win by inches from Lehrke in the best finish of the evening. Haw was a length away third. Time, 5m 5 4-ss. B grade, one mile cycle handicap: B. Old (60) 1, D. Newall (50) 2, W. Ireland (scr) 3. Six started. A good finish resulted in'Old beating NewaU by a wheel, with the third boy several yards away. Time, 2m 40s. B grade, two mile cycle handicap: D. Newall (80) 1, W.-Ireland (scr) 2, B. Old (120) 3. NewaU rode weU in the last lap and won by 20 yards from Ireland, who just beat Old in the last few yards for second place. Six started. Time, 5m 31s. , , ~ „ C grade, half mile cycle handicap: D. Fox (40yds) and N. Knight (25) deadheat 1, D. Stafford (30) 3. Six started. Time, Im 18s. What promised to be an exciting finish was marred by a spill m the last lap in which Warren, Neighbour and I. Knight’s chances were eliminated. Messenger boys’ half mUe cycle: N. Payne (scr) 1, V. Jury (15) 2, L. Smith (40) 3. Five started. Won. by two lengths. Time, Im 265. 100 yards running: W. Aubrey (8) 1, C. Fox (5) 2, B. Berryman (11) 3. Four started. Won by a touch, -with a yard between second and third. Time, 114-ss» 880 yards running: W. Aubrey (90) 1, G. Sole (140) 2, R. Wilson (100) 3. Five started. Won by two yards, with the third man several yards away. Time, Im 57 2-ss. , * , k A grade one mile miss and out scratch cycle race: C. Parker 1, J. Foote 2, T. Haw 3, G. Plucke 4. Nine started. Inches separated the first two, with Haw a length away third. Time, 2m 41 4-ss. B grade one mile miss and out scratch cycle race: D. Newell 1, C. .Pulford 2. Time, 2m 47 4-ss, Newell again finished well and beat Pulford by a length. Seven started.
■ C grade three-quarter mile scratch cycle race: C. Neighbour 1, H. Knight 2, T % Night 3. Five started. Won by two lengths, with the third boy three lengths away. Time, 2m 10s. Aggregate points in the scratch races are:—

Thirty cyclists and several runners have entered for the New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League’s open sports meeting, which is to take place on Saturday afternoon, commencing at 1.30 p.m. The contests for the Taranaki track cycle championships wiU no doubt be the most interesting events on the-pro-gramme, and with riders of the calibre of C. Parker, J. Foote, C. Burke, G. Parker, T. Haw and others competing some, great cycling should be witnessed. The 100 yards running championship is very open and a good race should be seen. /Arrangements have been made for the Regimental Band to parade from the post office at 1.30 p.m.;, A presentation carnival dance will be held in the Westown hall in the evening, when the trophies won during the afternoon will be presented. Given a fine day everything points to a splendid afternoon’s entertainment for sport enthusiasts... ’
