STAR FOOTBALL CLUB MEETS

FINANCIAL POSITION GOOD. POSSIBILITY OF GYMNASIUM. More than 80 members were present last night at the annual meeting of the Star Rugby Football Club, New Plymouth. Mr. A. L. Humphries presided. In the annual report it was stated that . five teams were again entered in the club competitions and all acquitted themselves well The seniors and juniors were the runners-up in the north-. em division championships. The thirds, fourths and fifths also did remarkably c . well. With a little more attention’ to training all should do better next season. ' . The annual matches for the Dan O’Brien and Carbine Shields with the Tukapa Club were played at the commencement of the season and resulted in Tukapa retaining the Dan O’Brien Shield and Star the Carbine. At the eiid of the season a match for the Humphries Shield between Star. and Tukapa fifths resulted in a win for Tukapa. Congratulations were offered J. Ross, R. McLeod and J. Kinsella on their selection in the Taranaki representatives, also to J. Kinsella and W. Aubrey, who were selected to representative honours in the B team. In the early part of the season Star competed in the Kaponga seven-a-side tournament and won the shield. The junior ten-a-side tournament at Tariki was won by Star. Mr. G. W. Palmer died during the season. He was one of the stalwarts and x his advice and help had been greatly missed. Sympathy was extended to Ids family. The financial side of the club’s affairs was fairly satisfactory. It had a credit balance of £99 with which to commence the season. The committee investigated several propositions in connection .with the securing of a gymnasium but unfor- ' tunately none was sound enough to warrant the club’s being tied down with heavy obligations for a number of years. “COMBINATION LACKING.” /. Mr. Humphries said there was some- , thing lacking in the club’s teams, good though they were. Combination seemed to be lacking. Individualism seemed to be present in the teams—the win of; the Kaponga seven-a-side trophy showed that. He suggested that the forwards were not quite good enough. The forwards must do their best. If they did, then the backs would have their chance and the team instead of being ninnerup would be on top. ” - ?■ ! ? He congratulated the club on the splen- 1 did balance-sheet and paid a tribute .to the work of the committee. There was no reason why the players should, not do as well on the playing field as the committee had done for the club. The report and balance-sheet were adopted unanimously. - _ Fifteen new members were/elected.- . The election of officers resulted:—Patron, Mr. D, Penwarden; president, Mr. A. L. Humphries; six vice-presidents; club captain, Mr. J. N. Eva; vice-captani, Mr. G. Beere; delegates to the Taranaki ‘ Rugby Union, Messrs J. McLeod and’,T. Aylward; secretary, Mr., S. Bridger; assistant secretary, Mr. .F. Nicholson; treasurer, Mr. Seldon; auditor, Mr. E. L. Humphries; executive committee* Messrs V. Garth, C. Shaw,- H. Wolfe, L. Hartley, E. Hoffman and J. Rothery, and Dr. G. H. Thomson. Team managers were elected as follow:—Senior, Mr. A. G. Rutherford;-jun-ior, Mr. J. Somerton; third, Mr. H. Billing; fourth, Mr. F. C. Ferry; fifth, Mr. C. Smith. . It was decided that the custom of the club in presenting clocks to members’ on their marriage should ’be amended so that only those with ’ five years in . the . club should benefit from the gifts. / . . ' . It was decided that the opening day for the club should be March 24. Mr. MacDonald was, on the suggestion of Dr. Thomson, unanimously elected the club coach for the year. '■■■' Moved by Mr. T. Aylward, a remit to the union that the broadcasting r of football matches at Pukekura Park., be reinstated was carried. . ■ . . . . - Honoraria of £5 each were granted to the secretary and the assistant - secretary. Mr. Aylward said that the cltib was particularly fortunate in the- two officers. ■' '< • ■ A donation of £2 2s was made to the Referees’ Association and £2 2s to the St. John Ambulance Association. GYMNASIUM PROPOSAL. Mr. Aylward stated that the committee was at present considering an eminently suitable proposal for a gymnasium and within a week or two it was hoped that arrangements would be made to have / a building for this season. \ / In discussing the position of the club coach, Mr. Ferry said that the. coach should have some official standing so far as the selection of the senior team Was concerned. ' The suggestion was opposed by Messrs McLeod and Aylward on the ground that the club coach was appointed to supervise the coaching and tactics of the-club’s teams and not for the selection of the teams. . ■ ' ; ■ The coach, Mr. MacDonald, explained that he would require some control of the seniors. Although he thought that •he would work harmoniously with the team manager, there ought to be. something at stake and he would expect to share in the selection of the senior team. Mr. Ferry’s motion that the selection committee of the senior team should be the coach, the manager and the field captain was carried with one dissentient. Mr. F. McKay was elected a life member of the club. Mr. L. paid a tribute to the work Mr. McKay had done and the motion was carried Unanimously.
