The percentage of rates received by the Inglewood County Council before thq imposition of the 10 per cent, penalty was 76-52 per cent., the lowest for the past five years. , P The county treasurer (Mr._H. W. Nash) submitted a detailed financial statement showing that up to March 1 general rates totalling £5695 12s Bd, or 77-93 per cent., were collected of £7309 Is 9d levied. Of hospital rates £1307 2s, or 76-52; per cent., were collected of a total of £1707 15s lid levied. Of special rates £1876 -0s Bd, or 72 5 per cent., were collected of a total of £2585 5s Id levied. Of the general, hospital and special rates £BB7B 15s 4d, or 76 52 per cent., were collected oi a total of £11,602 2s 9d. Of the harbour rate £lBO4 10s Bd, or 75.78 per cent., were collected of a total of £2382 13s 6d. The grand total levied on behalf of both the county and the harbour board amounted to £13,984 16s 3d, of which £10,683 6s, or 76.39 per cent., were paid. The position this year is worse than for five years. In 1930, 92.7 per cent, of £l4 624 17s was paid at the same date, in 1931 82.5 per cent, of £14,555 8s Bd, in 1932 86.3 per cent, of £12,892 15s 7d, in 1933 80.9 per cent, of £11,710 15s, and this year 76.52 per cent, of £11,602 2s 9d. Of the ridings this year the west has done best, having paid £1989 5s 4d, or 81.78 per cent, of the total general rate levied. Then follows the south with £1909 15s 2d or 79.02 per cent., the north £1362 11s 9d or 75.72 per cent., and the east, £434 0s 5d or 65.85 per cent. . The chairman expressed the opinion that the outstanding rates, which totalled £3301 10s 3d, would be considerably reduced before the end of March. The clerk pointed out that there was no legislative authority this year to remit the 10 per cent, penalty. The count;, Treasurer also submitted a statement showing that at date the bank overdraft was £lOB4 18s 6d. On main county roads £ll7 had been expended, leaving £73 available for expenditure; main highways, expended £3892, available £1158; north riding, expended £731, available £3681; soufh riding, expended £1206, over-expended£l; east riding, expended £376, available £189; west riding, expended £1333, available £578. With one month of the financial year to go £5940 had been expended, leaving £2366 available, while the proportionate expenditure for the 11 months was £7610.
