The first meeting of St. Luke’s Ladies’ Guild for this year was held at the home of the president (Mrs. J. H. Street), when there was a very good attendance, the vicar (Rev. W. S. C. Stephens) also being present.. .Several business matters were dealt with, and arrangements made for the annual meeting next month. There was a large crowd present at the local hall oil Wednesday evening when a "Sympathy Evening” was tendered Mr. and Mrs. Wey, whose home was recently destroyed by fire. Euchre was played in the supper room under the supervision of Mr, J. Thompson and Mr. L. Rundle, eight tables being occupied. The prizewinners were Mrs- A. Lowe 1, Mrs. A.'H. Street 2; Mr. N. Rundle 1, Mr. A. Rowe 2. Excellent music for the dancers was supplied gratis by Messrs. Rowe and Watson (piano and violin), while extras were played by Mrs. W. Hoskin and Miss Joyce Hammond. Several novelty dances were held during the evening, the Monte Carlo winners, being Mr. N. Hill and Miss V. Hoskin and Mr. G. Holmes and Miss G. Sole, while the Lucky Spot Waltz was won by Mr, and Mrs. W. Hoskin. The duties of masters of ceremonies were capably carried out by Messrs. T-. Mallon and L. Lambeth. A sumptuous homemade supper was served by the members of. the different organisations under the supervision of Mrs, R. L. Parkin- After supper Mr. Parkin thanked all those who had helped in any way to make the function the success it undoubtedly was, and also said that the sum of over £8 had . been taken at the door, so that another £2 was available to be. spent further on kitchen articles for Mr. and Mrs. Wey the £6 guaranteed by the various organisations having been spent previously. Dancing was resumed till after midnight. A most delightful "Riverside Party’ was given-recently -by Mr. and Mrs. W. Hoskin, when a gathering of over thirty young people spent a most enjoyable evening by the river. Swimming was indulged in early ip the evening, races and exhibitions of swimming and diving being given by several present. A dainty supper was served round a large bonfire, and games were enjoyed by one and all present, The happy gathering was brought to a close with the ginging of “Auld Lang Syne” and three hearty cheers for the host and hostess. The March meeting of the local branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at Mrs. French’s home, when there were 20 ladies present. Business matters were discussed, and a report given of the recent provincial executive meeting at New Plymouth. It was reported by the president that she and members of the executive had visited a family op the Henwood Road who had lost their home and belongings by fire. Articles of clothing, material and footwear, were at once provided, while another parcel' of clothing has been sent from members ih the district, The large number of pound parcels brought to this meeting were also sent to this familyBusiness concluded, a social time was spent put of doors, Mrs. Albert Rowe winning a putting Mternopn tea was served on the lawn by the hostesses Mesdames French and Oman. The annual school picnic was held this year at East End beach, when there was a good attendance of parents and children. A happy time was spent in swimjping and tennis, the weahter being M. Walbran has returned from a holiday in Auckland . Miss Elsie Parkin, left on Wednesday to spent a holiday, in Auckland.
