RETAILERS OF OPUNAKE

THE ANNUAL MEETING HELD. APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS. The annual meeting of the Opunake Retailers’ Association was held on Friday night. Members present were Messrs. H. J. Mantey (president), R. Hughson (secretary), J. P. Burton, J. Wilson, H. Barra clough, H. Smith, R. Peat, J. ney, J. Thorpe, T. P. Hughson junr., R. Manu, J. Morris, D. McCrone, P. Dalrymple, A. M. Kerr and Mr. and Mrs. Walmsley. The chairman in his report stated that the steady progress of the association had been maintained during the year. Prices for dairy produce had shown a marked improvement, which it was hoped would be maintained. When all outstanding monies were received a small credit would be shown for the current year. This was considered a very creditable position, as this year’s committee was faced with an old account which was overlooked. Another large outlay was the replacement of half of the coloured light equipment. Christmas lighting was again very effective and popular with the large crowd. The association expressed appreciation of the continued support of the Opunake Power Board, whose assistance greatly helped the carrying out of the street lighting scheme. The free buses, including special assistance by Opunake motors and Gibsons Ltd. were more popular than ever. Mr. Waswo’s service was hard put to it to accommodate passenger and several extr trips had to be made. A very acceptable donation was received from the Town Board towards the “New Flex” fund, and thanks were due to the board. The collections for the year amounted to £l7 2s 6d—the highest since 1930. It was decided to compensate Mr. Waswo for his special trips during Christmas.

The election of officials resulted: President, Mr. H. J. Mantey; vice-presidents, Messrs. R. Manu, H. Smith and R. Peat; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R. Hughson.

It was decided to close business premises at. 10.30 and re-open at 5 p.m. on St Patrick’s Day.

A vote of appreciation was accorded the president and secretary for the work they had done, during the Christmas and New Year period.
