BUTTER AND CHEESE SLACK
MARKETS QUIET BUT STEADY. DECREASE IN BUTTER STORES. Cheese is now back at the price of a fortnight ago, and butter has fallen Is, according to market reports received from the London firm of Henry A. Lane and Co., Ltd. The markets, although quiet, are steady. The price for white cheese is 43s and for coloured 455, compared with 44s and 47s last week and 42s and 47s a year ago. The present price is equivalent to 4Jd a lb. f.o.b. New Zealand ports for white cheese and 4|d. for coloured. London cheese gradings for the week ended. February 17 were 23,455 crates of white and 15,766 crates of coloured, a total of 39,221. Deliveries for the week ended February 23 were 22,710 crates (20,217, 22,500, 23,000 in the previous three weeks) compared with 20,500 crates in the same period last year. In store there were 80,690 crates (61,000, 60,500, 31,000, 23,000 the four previous weeks) compared with 49,720 crates at the corresponding date last year. The London price for New Zealand butter at the end of last week was 725, a drop of Is on the price the week before, and 4s down on last year’s price. The figure represents B|d a lb. f.o.b. NewZealand ports, and the London retail price is unchanged. The deliveries of New Zealand butter in London in the week ended February 23 were 1982 tons (2050, 2028 tons in the two previous weeks) compared with 1789 tons in the same week last year. In store the quantity was 7290 tons (6300, 5000, 3750 tons), compared with 6748 tons this time last year. Importers’ advances to factories for March have been fixed at 6Jd for butter and 3id for cheese.
