OAKURA SCHOOL PICNIC

CHILDREN’S.SPORTS DAY. The Oakura school held its annual picnic at Kawaroa Park, Neyz Plymouth, on Tuesday. The day was fine so the children were able to enjoy to the full the pleasures the park held for them. The children and parents were conveyed on lorries lent for the occasion by Messrs, W. A. Thomas, G. H. Bell and Ken Marsh.

After an early lunch a programme of sports was supervised by Messrs. Tills, Drake, Hughes, Morris, Shirley and Harvey. Results are:— Boys: 10, 11 12 and 13 years: R. Price 1, P. Thomas *2, V. Mangino 3. Nine years: A. Tills 1, R. Press 2, D. Smith 3. Eight years: G. Shirley 1, P. Hughes 2, R. Jury 3. Little follows: B. Tills 1, C. Mangino 2, D. Harvey 3. Tiny tots: E. Colson 1, M. Fisher 2. Open race: R. Press 1, V. Mangino 2, P. Thomas 3. Sack race, 10 and over: P. Thomas I,’M. Thomas 2, V. Mangino 3. Sack race, under 10: A. Tills 1, R. Jury 2, R. Moorcock 3, Three-legged: H. Moorcock and A. Tills 1, R. Price and P. Thomas 2, M. Thomas and V. Mangino 3. Potato in spoon: ’ R. Price 1, A. Tills 2, P. Thomas 3. Tug-of-war: V. Mangino’s team beat Pat Thomas’ team.

Mrs. Wheeler, Inglewood, and Mr. Thomas donated prizes for the races. Mrs. and Miss Bumbury gave a large tin of lollies. Fruit was provided by the committee. The young people enjoyed several sets of tennis before lunch, after which they spent a pleasant hour or' tWo in the baths. Those responsible for the success of the day were Messrs. Harvey (chairman), Hughes, Bell, Morris, Shirley and Mi Tills (headmaster). The arrangements for lunch and afternoon tea for the children and grownups, of whom there were over 100, were in the hands of a committee comprising Mesdames Harvey, Bell, Hughes, Tills, Morris, Corbett, Jury and Shirley, Misses Greatbatch and' Allen.
