ITINERARY OF TOURISTS NEW SOUTH WALES FARMERS. TWO MAKE VISIT IN PROTEST. CRITICISM OF THE DEPARTMENT. Two members of the party of New South Wales farmers now tourmg New Zealand visited Taranaki yesterday, but 16 more of the party would have come if the Tourist Department had given them the opportunity, it wasi stated at.a meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce last night. The two men who came, Messrs. A. n. Martin and I. W. Scott, were particularly interested in dairying. Finding at Wellington that the itinerary arranged by the New Zealand and New South Wales Tourist Departments did not include a dairying district, they insisted on a change of itinerary. The Tourist Department, Mr. E. K. Cameron stated, advised them to go to Wanganui for two days, pass through to New Plymouth and so on to Auckland. On arrival at Wanganui the farmers were amazed to find it was not a dairying area and immediately travelled on to Hawera, arriving there on Thursday night. They visited the Normanby dairy factory and the dairy laboratory at Hawera and later left for New Plymouth. They were annoyed with. both tourist departments, they told Mr. Cameron, and would make a protest. They wished to have time to make a thorough investigation of practical dairying and were given no opportunity to do so. It was alleged they were asked by departmental officials at Wellington not to broadcast the fact that they had altered their but to slip away quietly so that the other members of the party would not be tempted to emulate their example. Intense indignation, was voiced by the chamber at the tourist departments att! Yesterday afternoon the two visitors were taken to various pomts of mterest about New Plymouth by Mr. A. M. Pur ser, including the freezing works at Moturoa, with which they were very favourably impressed. To-day they ar to be taken by Mr. H. C. Sampson president of the New Plymouth Jersey Breeders’ Association, to inspect the studs of several North Taranaki Jersey breeders.
