The increased price of wool has had its immediate effect in one direction in Wanganui, namely in the increased number of pupils from the country who are attending secondary schools in the city, and who will be boarding during the time of their tuition. The 37th birthday of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith occurred yesterday, and last night Sir Charles and Lady Kingsford Smith intended to observe it in fitting manner. In the space of a comparatively short time, since he commenced flying at the age of 20, Sir Charles has accomplished many memorable flights and at present he is the holder of II world’s records. A few days ago his flying time reached a total of 6000 hours, and this covers flights over hundreds of different countries, as well as the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and five times across the Tasman»Sea.

Two thousand gallons, or roughly five tons, of ice cream, were consumed by the people of Christchurch last Saturday, Sunday and Monday, when the weather was particularly warm. The busiest people have been, the ice cream manufacturers, who have had to woik overtime to meet the demands made on them. “This was our busiest time this summer,” said the manager of one concern. “The nearest approach to it was about the middle of December, but the figures then hardly bear comparison with those of the last few days.”

An oxygen-breathing apparatus of the latest type has been received from England by the Hamilton fire brigade. Under severe tests it gave great satisfaction, and a number of members of the brigade will be thoroughly trained in its use. The cylinder of the appliance holds a quantity of pure oxygen, and a dial tells the wearer how much longer he may remain in a dangerous area.

A gap of six miles on the Wanganui River road still remains to be metalled before there will be an all-weather route from the city to Pipiriki. The gang that is metalling from the Pipiriki end has reached the hill overlooking Jerusalem, and the metal being laid from the opposite direction has reached Ranana. Every possible effort is being made to-have the work completed this metalling season. Metal is being obtained from Moutoa Island, near Ranana, the site of a famous battle in the early days. In the opinion of Mr. W. Goodffellow, the British business men are the best in world. When speaking in Christchurch, Mr. Goodfellow said that he used to think, especially when he was working in America, that British traders were slow and behind the times. However when he visited Britain and got into clos_ personal touch with business men there, his views rapidly changed. “The British business man is the best m the world to-day,” he said. “He does not shout about what he is doing, but he gets on with the job and gets it done in the best way possible.”
