TARANAKI ASSOCIATION MEETS. SIGN-POSTING DURING JANUARY. The first meeting for 1934 of .the Taranaki Automobile Association council was held- at New Plymouth last night. Present: Messrs. W. T, Guild (chairman), F. A. Lee, W. S. Bamsey, F. Dodunski, N. F. Little, J. Wilton, F. Amoore, C. E. Monaghan, F. T. Davis and F. H. Blundell and Dr. G. P. Adamson. Twenty-three new signs had been erected since the last meeting, reported Mr. Amoore. The signs for Carrington Road had been''prepared and would be erected when the road was completed* The Lepperton overhead bridge had been adequately signed prior to the recent fatal accident, but an aditional. sign, making three in all, had been placed there since the occurrence. Two signs had been destroyed on Mam South Road, continued Mr. Amoore. The signs had been wrenched off the ports and one post had been deliberately split from top to bottom. Purangi Road would be shortly attended to in the matter of signs and, when finished, would be well supplied. Mr, Amoore stated that fennol and long grass, which were growing over signs, was causing trouble in numerous places, „ . The service officer (Mr. R. Gredig) reported that during January he had collected four subscriptions, had enrolled two new members and. had erected 24 signs. He had visited most parts of the association’s district, covering 1703 miles. Visits had .been made to the Stratford races on two days and to the New Plymouth aerodrome on the arrival of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. A total of 70 inquiries had been attended to and 40 telephone messages received. Temporary signs had been erected notifying the closing for repairs of Junction Road between New Plymouth and Egmont Village. *The executive for 1934 was appointed as follow: Messrs. Guild, Amoore, Blundell, Little and W- C. Weston; signs committee, Mr. Amoore. The difficulty of negotiating streets at night when the lights of stationary cars were full on was. mentioned by Dr. Adamson. He referred to inconvenience he had experienced that evening, when driving into King Street. He was dazzled by the glare of two lights of a parked car, and as the street was. narrow and cars were on either side he had an uncomfortable time parking his own car. The Inglewood Chamber of Commerce is to be advised that the association cannot at present make a donation towards the extension of facilities at the Inglewood camp site. ,* The South Taranaki Automobile Association is to be informed that during the illness af its officer, Mr. J. McKee", the Taranaki Association’s officer will be available to give assistance on exceptionally busy occasions. The auxiliary road service had been very satisfactory during the holidays, it was reported. A subsidy of £3 is to be allowed the Waitara Seaside Improvement Society as an aid in top-dressing the newly-con-structed road to the camp site at the Waitara beach. The matter of re-publishing the association’s rules was left to the incoming executive. Mr. Amoore was appointed the association’s representative on the Egmont National Park Board. A letter of appreciation with reference to the services of the camp-warden at the Belt Road camp site (Mr. Blair) will be forwarded to the New Plymouth Borough Council, the warden’s employer, it was stated that many motorists had remarked on the courtesies and assistance received from Mr. Blair. The Urenui school committee wrote expressing appreciation of a “safety first” lecture given at the Urenui school by the service officer. Twenty-seven new members were elected. One resignation was received from a man who was leaving the district. The service officer had been exceptionally busy during the holiday period, it was reported. A member said he had often seen Mr. Gredig on the roads.
