MR. H. M. REEVES DEAD

JOURNALIST AND LANDOWNER. v WELL-KNOWN RACING BREEDER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Mr. Hugh Maude Reeves, Hororata, a well-known Canterbury landowner and breeder of racehorses, died to-day at the age of .65 years. He was a son of the Hon. William Reeves, who for many years was managing-director of the Lyttelton Times Company and first chairman of the United Press Association of New Zealand, a position which he held for a record period, of 13 years. Mr. Hugh Reeves was also a brother of the Hon. William Pember Reeves. He was born in Christchurch and educated at Christ’s College. He twice held the 220 yards and 440 yards New Zealand running championships and also c represented Canterbury at cricket and f represented New- Zealand in the Australian and New Zealand athletic championships. In 1887 he entered journalism on the staff of what was then the Lyttelton Times (now the Christchurch Times). From 1900 to 1905 he was editor of the Christchurch Star, during which period he published the first 8 o’clock Saturday sports newspaper in the Dominion. In 1905 he took up farming, owning at various times several places in Canterbury. At one time he was a partner with Mr. L. G. D. Acland -in the Cecil Peak sheep station at Lake Wakatipu, which is now owned by Mr. Acland. For many years Mr. Reeves was deeply interested in racehorse breeding and his Hororata stud 'gained New \ Zealand a reputation, Red Manfred being one of its recent products. j In 1902 Mr. Reeves married a daughter of Dean Walter Harper, Christchurch. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Messrs H. T. Reeves, L. W. P. Reeves and J. H. Reeves, and a daughter, Mrs. M. H. O’Rorke, Lake Coleridge.
