PREPARATION FOR RACES

HAWERA TRACKS BUSY SEVERAL SMART GALLOPS. AGA KHAN AND CARFEX PLEASE. The Hawera tracks were much busier on Saturday morning than they have been for some time. Several useful gallops were performed, among those to please most being Aga Khan, Carfex, Taitoru and Richfield. At the commencement of the morning’s work the plough, on which all galloping was done, was rather dead because of slight showers during the night. It dried very quiqkly, however, and after breakfast showed no traces of moisture. Naturally the going was not as fast early as later. Aga Khan (Vaughan) and Carfex (Cole) opened proceedings by galloping seven furlongs in lm. 30 l-ss. They were together at the close, although Aga Khan seemed to be going more easily than his companion. It was a good gallop for at that stage of the morning the track was by no means fast. The first halfmile was run in 50 3-ss. and five furlongs in lm. 4s. Diagano (Robinson) and No Doubt (Vaughan) moved smartly over half a mile in 49Js. with little between them at any part. No Doubt is not opposed by a very strong field in the Juvenile on Thursday and seems to have a royal chance.

Over a similar distance Miss Louvain (Feasey) and Ingenuity (Sheild) were on terms in 50 3-55., with the latter going slightly the more comfortably. Both these fillies have improved a good deal in the last week or so.

The Tiger (Edgecombe) hit out very boldly in a six furlong working gallop, taking lm. 22Js. He was supposed to have done pace work only but pulled exceptionally hard . Chief Line (Feasey), unaccompanied, traversed seven furlongs in lm. 32 l-ss. Round Table (Coyle) ran home the last three furlongs of a couple of rounds of light pacework in 37 4-ss. He looks none the worse for his trip to Trentharh. Taitoru (Sheild), Beau Star (Vaughan) and Fantastic (Feasejri were associated over five furlongs. From a poor start Beau Star broke away about ten lengths ahead of Fantastic.with Taitoru another two lengths behind; the first-mentioned was steadied, however, and Taitoru was alongside him from the three-furlong peg onwards, with Fantastic beaten off in lm. 315., a smart effort. Taitoru was not asked to do his best and worked very attractively. Beau Star went well, but of course the start was all in his favour. Fantastic made a very poor showing. Argument (Glynn) slipped over three furlongs alone in 38 3-ss. It was his first appearance on the racecourse tracks for about three weeks and a substantial change in his condition is .noticeable, for he has fined down a good deal, now presenting a very racy appearance.

Richfield (W. E. Pine), St. Clara (Edgecombe) and Benedictine (Feasey) were sent six furlongs together, covering it in lm. 17 l-ss. When the post was reached Richfield was a length in front with St. Clara and Benedictine on terms. Richfield made a good showing. If started in the Whareroa he should be hard to beat. St. Clara hit out freely as usual, but Benedictine. was responsible for easily his best performance to date, although he had an advantage in the weights. He is improving with every gallop. The Daniloff gelding (Conway) trained by J. Fryer was given his first schooling practice. At his first attempt -he baulked but, taken back again, he jumped the fence very promisingly, although like all new chums he went very high. With more experience he should be a first-class jumper. Considerable interest was evinced in the appearance of Stanchion ■ (Tucker). Stanchion was allotted a similar task to give a creditable display which was hardly in keeping with the reports of his poor showings when previously tried.

Pacework on the main plough was apportioned to Sandlark, Omariri, Royal Peak, Hilary, Rollovant, Waiwhetu, Peter Jackson, Colenso, La Crown, General Quex, Rose Day, Friesland and the Sandstar gelding. Oriel, Golden Hair, Paparua and Silver Wings did useful light’ work on the inside plough. Eara, Autumn Leaf, Radiant Star and the Colossus youngster were exercised on the two-year-old track. On Friday morning there was a little fast work.

Sandlark (Feasey) and Rollovant (Sheild) were together all the way over three furlongs in 37Js. Both horses moved attractively, the two-year-old in particular working well. Blue Boy (Duncan) ran home down the straight to complete a round of steady pace work. Fantastic (Feasey) registered , Im. 37 3-ss. for a seven furlong working gallop. NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK MIST HAMPERS WORK. LITTLE GALLOPING DONE. A heavy mist hung over the New Plymouth track before breakfast and consequently there was little, fast work. All the horses with engagements at Hawera, however, are well forward and in good order for their tasks. Headmistress did two circuits at a solid half pace on the inside grass. The mare was disappointing on the recent holiday circuit but appears to be in great heart at present. ' Merry Way hit out in her usual free fashion in a similar, task. The mare has settled down in her new quarters and is doing well. ■ Silk Sox strode out freely over two circuits on the same track. He looks bright and well after his racing at Trentham. Refresher was allotted half-pace work, moving well. He appears to be ready to show his best again shortly. On the trial grass Leo Colossus, shaped pleasingly over five furlongs in Im. 3s. He will race in the final event at Hawera on Thursday but may require an outing before being at his best. Royal Acre hit out freely over a couple of rounds on the inner. He is still a little on the burly side but should be ready to race at New Plymouth. Matomi and Windscreen did easy work. The latter is developing into a good filly. Lady Kyra was given easy exercise. Orapai cantered twice round on the inside. He looks well after his let up and has thrown off all signs of the soreness that troubled him during the spring.

Adept and Jaeana were sent twice round, the second time at a solid half pace. Adept hit out in good style and appears none the worse for her race at Ashhurst. Arvada worked over a mile at threequarter pace. The mare ran two good races at Ashhurst and may be tried over a distance of ground. Lalla Quex hit out in her usual, bold style over a mile and a-quarter at threequarter pace. She ’has been working well lately and her failure at Ashhurst was puzzling. Sovereign Quex, a two-year-old by Lord Quex from Gold Painting, purchased by R. Barlow on behalf of a patron at the Trentham sales, was exercised on the inner in company with Amyril. He is a compact sort that should make a good galloper. Amyril, just in from a spell, is looking above herself. Aussie Ra was going better than Tahurangi at the conclusion of half a mile in 51 2-ss. Aussie Ra seems much improved and should make a good.-three-year-old.
