SOME HANDEL STUDIES

RECITAL AT ST MARY’S CHURCH. Mr. R. Neville Renaud was happy in his choice of subjects for a brief Handel recital given by him after evensong at St. Mary’s Church, New Plymouth, last night. The recital began with a fragment of a lost work of Handel’s, the Bouree from “Il Pasto Fido.” It consists of three sections, the third being an amplification of the ■ first but •broadened out with fire and brilliance. The second section is treated in a charming manner,. ending with a dainty repetition of the figure leading directly into the first subject which is made big and broad and fiery to the end. By way of charming contrast the Bouree was followed by the Minuette from the overture to “Bemise.” Its stately, graceful, old-world style was most attfactive, and prepared the way for the solo “Where’er You Walk” (from the Pastoral Cantata “Acis and Galatea”) sung ’by Mr. Basil Collinge. The music is thoroughly Handelean in character, and is a very pleasing and beautiful solo to which Mr. Collinge did full justice. The recital closed with the “Overture to Athalia,” one of Handel’s fiery and brilliant pieces, thoroughly indicative of a full orchestra and organ. Mr. Renaud’s interpretation of each subject was in keeping, and showed the powerful contrast of which the composer was capable.
