SYDNEY MEN DIE OF HEAT
BUSH FIRES IN THE SUBURBS. FAMILIES FIGHT TO SAVE HOMES. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Sydney, Jan, 25, New South Wales received the full force of the heat wave yesterday when the maximum reading in Sydney was 103.4 degrees, while country towns recorded up to 112 degrees. Two men died in the metropolis from heat and many were treated in hospitals and ambulance stations. Bush fires broke out in nearly every suburb where there was bush and long grass. Fire brigades had a particularly torrid day. Men, women and children fought for hours at Penshurst to save their homes from the flames. Eden, on the south coast, was surrounded by fires last night and motorists on Prince’s highway were driven back by blazing timbers.
